Texas State Fair

Our State Fair is a great State Fair! Don't miss it, don't even be late... well we were late! (That is, according to Maaike; the gates opened at 10, and we weren't there until 10:30 -- oh no!) The Texas State Fair is HUGE -- everything is bigger here, you know! It is also known for its culinary, um, triumphs. Everything is deep fried, and each year the competition is fierce. If you have heard of or sampled deep fried Twinkies or Snickers, they started as Texas State Fair delicacies. This year, the finalists for the big deep fried prize were: grilled cheese sandwich, banana split, chocolate covered strawberry waffle balls, smores, pineapple ice cream, chicken fried bacon, and Jelly Belly beans. All deep fried. The bacon won Best Flavor; banana split got Most Creative. We sampled the bacon and the smores. I (Marylynn) didn't care for the smores, but we all liked the bacon -- in very small amounts!
We went on a Saturday, and there was a UT/OU football game at the stadium within the park. Did you know football is kind of a big thing here? When either team scored, the whole Fair seemed to shake, and when the 70,000 seat stadium emptied, the already full fair was a sea of orange and crimson. Moving was easy, if you didn't care where you were going. Just let the currents of people carry you! It was insane!
We saw many exciting shows, rode some crazy rides, petted strange animals, and had a great day. The Fair lasts a whole month, so if anyone is interested, we'll see you next Fall!

We went to the Texas State Fair when we lived there! You're right, it's a biggie.
